Every January, 37 years now and for 4 days Angoulême, a small town in southern France, changes its view and become the centre of International Comic Festival (Festival International de la Bande Dessinée). From the very beginning, the International Comics Festival has been bringing together all the comic book lovers – and that is what makes it so original. Nowhere else will you find, together in the same place and at the same moment, so many people in the profession meeting with their publics. That is why Angoulême gets to be the biggest comic book shop in the world for a few days. There are of course major publishers, you can meet creators and admire their job and also you can participate in interesting workshops. Many stands offer many varieties of comics. Also, character toys, 3D objects, posters, screen prints, collectibles, special series, games, toys, cards and all sorts of goodies… The choice of products gets bigger every year all the more since for the past years the manga phenomenon has also generated a number of licensed products and developed an ever-increasing readership. Every year the festival presents a program of TV and cinema films. The Festival audiovisual program includes documentary films on authors or comics as well as fictions, either TV cartoons or animation films or real films inspired by a comic book, a character or a cartoonist.
I’ve been there on 2008. The atmosphere was magic. Music everywhere, stand with comics, cartoonists presented their job and signed autographs. You could just have fun, you could fill your luggage with comic books or just you could become a model for a creator. Interesting exhibitions, films and tv shows have composed a unique comic fiesta.
Last but not least I left Fauve, the mascot of the Festival. Fauve is a wildcat present in every single moment of Festival. Indeed, it’s adorable, that’s why this year there were a contest named “Anime ton Fauve” (Design your Fauve). Also Fauve give its name to Festival Prices, so Fauve d’ Or is given to the best albums and follow other Fauve Prices (Young Talents, Alternative Comics etc.)
And a little about Angoulême. Angoulême belongs to prefecture of Poitou Charente and it’s easily accessible from Bordeaux, Nice, Paris. There are trains very often and the prices are reasonable. Besides comics Angoulême is famous for its fortifications and also for its cathedral. Any time of year you could visit he Centre National de la Bande Dessinée, which offers a great variety of comics and here's also a vast library, much of it in English, where you're welcome to relax on cushions and flick through the comics.
Another riverfront museum close by is the Atelier-Musée du Papier, located in a disused cigarette-paper factory – a fitting tribute to the declining Charentais paper industry. While exhibits get into the history and technicalities of paper making, art isn't forgotten, with contemporary creations on show, utilizing paper, cardboard and pulp.
2011’s Comic Festival hasn’t been programmed yet but if you are comic lovers try to be there at least for once!
